The West Tech Loft project was the renovation of West Tech High School into upscale loft apartments. Following an 18 months budgeting period, the 9 month construction period began. Ailes Millwork's portion of the project included constructing sash for approximately 600 openings, averaging 5'x 9', as well as the replacement of some window frames. All weight and pulley sash were constructed of genuine mahogany and met the eligibility requirements for approval in the Certification Application process for use of federal tax incentives through the National Park Service tax credits.
Some of the challenges of this project were attempting to maintain the original profiles and sizes, but adapting to modern weather stripping and insulated glass. This included numerous mock-ups for approval of sight lines. Sash were of varying thickness and style, and no two openings were exactly the same in size, requiring extensive field measuring.
The West Tech Loft project was successfully completed through precise engineering, skilled craftsmanship and careful project management. Advanced CNC technology allowed Ailes Millwork to produce a large quantity of sash that were historically accurate in detail and still meet all delivery deadlines.
